HIV testing in Singapore is quick, confidential, and widely available. Here is what to expect so you can go in knowing exactly how it works.
The two common types of test
Most testing falls into one of two kinds:
- Rapid test: a small finger-prick blood sample or an oral swab. Results are ready in about 20 minutes, in the same visit.
- Standard laboratory test: blood is drawn and sent to a lab. It is very accurate, and results usually take a few days.
A doctor can advise which test suits you, often based on how recently you may have been exposed.
The window period
No test detects HIV the moment after exposure. There is a window period, the time the body needs before the virus shows up on a test. If you test too early, the result may not be reliable, so the doctor may suggest a repeat test later to be sure.
If a test is reactive
A first positive (“reactive”) rapid result is not a final diagnosis. It is always confirmed with a second, more specific test before any conclusion is made. If HIV is confirmed, treatment in Singapore is effective and allows people to live long, healthy lives.
Confidentiality
Your test and results are kept private and handled discreetly. You can ask the clinic about anonymous testing options if you prefer not to give your name.
Getting tested
You can do an HIV test on its own, or as part of a wider health screening. Walk in during opening hours, or contact us first if you have questions, and a real person will reply.
